Teaching Jobs in France
Students
So what’s your life going to be like, spending day after day helping the French acquire your native tongue? You won’t have a well-behaved class of smiling Thais, nor a thundering cluster of screaming Spanish kids. Classes, like most of Europe, tend to be small (smaller than Asian or East European classes). Discipline isn’t too much of a problem and the adults will rarely disagree with you. Unless you bad mouth Sartre. The French have interesting lives, are very willing to learn, have no problems being corrected and like to see the nuts and bolts of the language pointed out to them. This could be because of their traditional learning system. It could also be that they consider learning an enjoyment. That means they shouldn’t cringe when you say “homework” either.
On the other hand, although they like to talk most of the day, experienced around-the-world teachers do say they can be unimaginative and shy at times, meaning a lot of encouraging on your part. They’re not all that punctual as well, so late-starting classes (always one of my pet peeves) can become a norm. The secret: offer free pastry and coffee.
