Teach English in Spain
Ahh…bullfighting, beaches and bumping bottoms as you boogie the night away. Where else
can you get all the taste of old-style Europe with cobblestone roads, gothic cathedrals
and castles yet still the surf, sun, sand and some of the world’s best shindigs. Throw
in some of the best nightlife on the planet, renowned wines and tasty tapas and you’ve
got a lifestyle only dreamed about by most English speakers.
Each year thousands of people go to Spain to visit and either keep going back or look for a way to
live there permanently. It’s got to make you wonder. With 45 million people in a very warm place,
you would think stress flowed in the streets. Not with the Spaniards. Life is laid back and meant
to be enjoyed. You work so that you can live, not live for your work. “Manana por manana” as they
say – let tomorrow take care of tomorrow.
You can see that in the Spanish vocabulary that has inched it’s way into English. Siesta and fiesta are
two words that come to mind right away. Sleep and party. The siesta (a nap and escape from the daytime heat) i
s not as common as it used to be, but shops still close up in the afternoon and the locals are in no rush to
adopt a 9-5 mentality.
And then there’s the fiesta, a tradition that will never die with the Spanish. It’s a culture of late
nights, with the locals participating in “el Marche” – going from bar to bar for drinks up to six or
seven in the morning. On weekends and in most major cities, there are more people on the street at 5
in the morning than 5 in the afternoon. Not drunk, vomiting and fighting like you would expect, but
just dancing and singing. Spain is a country where life is lived on the street. And they’ve taken it
to new levels with some of the world’s greatest festivals.
A wonderful, warm climate, an amazing coastline of beaches, a relaxed atmosphere, incredible street
festivals, friendly people and great food (Spain is the world’s largest producer of olive oil, Europe’s
largest producer of citrus fruit and one of the top-wine producers in the world). Where else can you find
so many life-embracing ideas, universally accepted, all packed into a little European country? Spain is
certainly one of the best places in the world to live and enjoy life, and what better place to teach
English than in a place that will teach you about life.
